Client Challenges

The Ferrybridge 132kV Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) required delivery within a highly regulated and technically complex environment. The project had to meet strict Grid Code compliance and G99 requirements while ensuring seamless integration between the BESS, substation infrastructure, and third-party network operators.

A key challenge was achieving a safe, efficient, and coordinated interface design within a high-power density environment while maintaining full operational reliability.

Our Design & Engineering Solution

We delivered a complete 132kV electrical and civil design package, including system studies, layouts, and fully coordinated interface designs compliant with Grid Code and G99 standards.

Our scope included:

  • Full CDM 2015 compliance with risk-led design approach
  • Optimised site layouts incorporating safety, constructability, and environmental considerations
  • Design and integration of secure communication infrastructure between BESS units and control systems
  • Interface management between client systems and third-party network operators
  • Technical verification during commissioning and performance testing
  • Delivery of complete O&M manuals and As-Built documentation
Key Outcomes
  • On-schedule delivery through coordinated multidisciplinary execution
  • Reduced project risk through proactive engineering and interface management
  • Improved efficiency in construction and commissioning phases
  • Smooth transition into commercial operation
Result

The Ferrybridge project demonstrated robust 132kV engineering capability, integrating high-voltage design, civil works, and advanced control systems. From initial calculations to final handover documentation, the project maintained full compliance, safety, and performance integrity throughout.
