The IFA 2 HVDC Interconnector required a highly resilient and secure telecommunications architecture to support intercontinental power exchange between the UK and France.
The key challenge was to design a telecom system capable of maintaining 99.99%+ availability while carrying mission-critical protection and control signals. Any latency, instability, or signal loss between converter stations could result in a full system trip, directly impacting grid stability across both countries.
EVOSYS acted as specialist telecom consultants, engineering the critical communication backbone of the IFA 2 interconnector.
We designed a high-availability telecommunications architecture that ensured secure, deterministic, and ultra-low-latency data transfer between both converter stations.
Our engineering approach ensured full alignment between control and protection systems and the underlying telecom infrastructure, enabling instantaneous fault detection and isolation.
We also delivered comprehensive Testing & Commissioning (T&C) services to validate system performance, resilience, and redundancy before energisation of the link.
Through EVOSYS’s specialist telecom engineering expertise, the IFA 2 Interconnector achieved a successful and highly resilient communication system handover.
Our work ensured that the digital communication backbone of the interconnector matched the robustness of the HVDC infrastructure itself, enabling secure, stable, and efficient energy exchange between the UK and France.
